Graphic designers are expected to continue to experience a drop in demand as their careers stagnate and their employers are more reluctant to hire them.

The median projected annual earnings of graphic designers is expected to drop by about 7% from 2020 to 2024, according to the annual report by Graphic Designers Union (GDU).

But that’s a drop of about 1.2% from the year before, the report said.

The overall average annual earnings are projected to drop 2.9%, the first time since the study began in 2005 that graphic designers are projected in the low-paying, low-productivity jobs. 

According to the report, graphic designers will continue to see a drop off in the number of jobs they do.

In 2024, there were about 2.5 million graphic designers in the U.S., down from 4.3 million in 2021, the year of the Great Recession, the GDU said.

That was followed by an increase of 2.7 million in 2025 and an increase by 0.4 million in 2026.

“The graphic design profession is experiencing a decline,” said the GDV’s president, Dave Gandy.

“It’s been going downhill for the last couple of years.” 

Gandy said he was not surprised that graphic design jobs were being held by fewer people.

“We’re not seeing a large enough increase in employment,” he said.

“You’re seeing more people in low-skill occupations.” 

The GDU expects graphic designers to experience another drop in earnings over the next four years.

In 2020, graphic design job growth slowed to about 2%, compared with about 3% in 2020.

It said graphic designers who had more than 25 years of experience will be losing jobs.

“The future for graphic designers looks bleak,” Gandy said. 

The U.K.-based trade group Graphic Design UK said it is encouraging people to stay engaged with graphic design as a career.

“Graphic designers need to have a career,” said Steve Baker, the group’s vice president for communications.

Baker said the job market is expected for graphic design to be worse for people who are looking for other careers, and that graphic designing as a job is increasingly popular. “

They need people to understand the profession as a profession, not a job.”
